Ludovico Meneghetti

Lodovico Meneghetti (June 2, 1926 – July 19, 2020) was an Italian architect and urban planner. He graduated in architecture from the Politecnico di Milano in 1952. In 1953, Lodovico Meneghetti, along with Vittorio Gregotti and Giotto Stoppino, founded the architectural, urban planning, and design studio “Architetti Associati Vittorio Gregotti, Lodovico Meneghetti e Giotto Stoppino” in Novara, Italy. The partnership later expanded to Milan in 1963 but dissolved in October 1969 when the three architects permanently left their studio on Via De Togni in Milan.

Meneghetti was involved in various architectural and urban planning organizations and initiatives. He was a member of the Msa (Movimento studi per l’architettura) and the Adi (Associazione disegno industriale). He also joined the Inu (Istituto nazionale di urbanistica) and became a consultant for organizations like Gescal (Gestione case per lavoratori) and Ises (Istituto per lo sviluppo dell’edilizia sociale), especially in the area of school construction.

From 1956 to 1960, Meneghetti served as the assessor for urban planning, public works, and private construction for the Municipality of Novara. In 1962-1963, he led a group of technicians responsible for designing the new general regulatory plan, the plan for affordable and public housing, and the detailed executive plan for a large barracks area.

Starting in 1970, Meneghetti dedicated himself full-time to teaching and research at the Faculty of Architecture of the Politecnico di Milano. In 1972, he took on the role of director of the Institute of Urban Planning.

In 1983, he co-founded the Piero Bottoni Archive with Giancarlo Consonni and Graziella Tonon. This archive collected documents related to architecture, urban planning, design, local and national policies, and served as a valuable resource.

Meneghetti was the director of the Department of Architectural Design at the Politecnico di Milano from 1985 to 1988 and revitalized the magazine “QD. Quaderni del Dipartimento di progettazione dell’architettura.”

He authored numerous books and essays on topics related to territory, landscape, city planning, architectural and urban culture, the social role of design, issues in teaching design, and the role of public administrations.

From 2003, he contributed as an opinion writer to Eddyburg, a website focusing on cities, society, politics, founded in the same year by urban engineer Edoardo Salzano.
